Oh that's not much.

What it means is that you transmit a tiny little bit of data to a website, and then your computer waits to see if the data gets sent back. If it gets the same data back without problems, then the "ping" was a success. It also measure how much time it took for the data to come back.

It's used mostly to troubleshoot connection issues on the net. If you think you have a connection problem, you ping the website to see if your data is getting through.

The term comes from military submarines and their active sonar systems. You know in a submarine movie where the sonar is always making that pinging noise and it echoes back? That's where the idea came from.

You're checking to see how fast the computers respond to one another. You send a ping and then the other end bounces it back to you. You'll get the time it took for your ping to each the other end and vice versa. It's just a way to let you know what the lag time is.

To "ping" basically means to send a small piece of information to a site (URL means "Uniform Resource Locater," and it's the "www. ..." address in a browser bar).

By pinging a location, you can find out whether that location is attached to the network (ie online).

Your computer send a small information package to the URL then counts how long it takes to come back.
It is used to see if there is an open operational port at the receiving computer, by your Internet provider to make sure you still have a connection, and by other programs to test your connection speed.
