Where can I buy a new air conditioning compressor? I mean, what sort of store? What should I look for in the yellow pages?

You can't go to a store and buy one. They must be professionally installed by a licensed A/C contractor. The reason for this is the compressor requires the proper pressures to be set (can only be done with special instruments and gauges) and additional/new refrigerant added. In addition, the refrigerant can not be legally purchased without a license. Compressor prices vary by the tonnage of the system and possibly the area you live in. I suggest you contact a local A/C service shop for more information and pricing.

Your first two answers were right on the money. This is not '' a do it yourself repair.'' I would suggest calling a local HVAC contractor. The other thing is depending on the age of the unit, I would consider just replacing the whole Condenser, not just the compressor. A new compressor installed (out of warranty period), most of the time will run you about the same price as installing a new unit . Plus you will get a brand new manufacturer and labor warranty with it. You will probably have to upgrade your Evaporator Coil as well, because of the efficiency changes from 10 seer to 13 seer minimum. It would be a better investment to upgrade the equipment if you were planning to be living at your home for a while. If not go with the compressor.

you would look under appliance parts for it, for a window a/c unit. for a central a/c unit, heating and cooling. the replacement of a compressor is not a do it yourself type of repair. you will need some very specialized tools and equipment that would cost you more than a repairman. get a quote from a repairman for this work, if it is a window unit, consider getting a new one. the new ones are likely to be much more efficient than one that is 10 years old. good luck, hope this helps.

Under air conditioning supplies and parts listed in the yellow pages. Most places don't sell to people off the street but only to folks with a/c license.Only way to have the warranty be in effect is to have it installed by professional's.Good luck
