Hp is very good, alot better then Dell.
Those who say Dell is best is because that’s all they know and owned, they don’t know any better.
Dell uses proprietary (non standard) components making them extremely limited to upgrade later. (and eventually you will need to upgrade)
Their customer support is just as bad, mostly immigrants you can’t understand and hang-up on you when you when you ask them a question they can’t answer.

I own a HP and it serves me well, What I like about it is that it can be upgraded on the motherboard. Everything isn't "hardwired" like say, your Dell or Compaq's. In my opinion IBM chips have not only better performance than Intel/Pentium but also again, in my opinion, the HP is more versatile than others I have used.
I own the HP Pavillion a420n. I paid around $1000 about 4 years ago. It has way more hard drive space and speed than I'll ever need. Today you can probably pick one of these up for about $600 or $700. Also, I put in more RAM and another video card for gaming. This type of pc will serve you well too.

HP's tend to be over-priced for the specification. Compare Dell's equivalent spec in price.
Also, don't spec the PC for what you need now - try and think 18-24 months ahead i.e if you think you only need 1Gb RAM now, actually get 2Gb - particularly with the introduction of Vista imminently (wait until after the full launch so that your machine ships with it).
Personally, I've had excellent service from Dell with multiple support options and they are upgradeable - don't believe that you HAVE to buy Dell upgrades, you can get compatible parts from normal vendors - with any brand, always important that any upgrade is checked for compatibility.

hp's are ok...not top of the line but for general purpose it does just fine...they can be upgraded and has pretty good CS. We bought ours at Best Buy...pretty good service there. Good Luck!

Can't guarantee the "won't break down" bit, but a Dell with 1 year on site warranty is a good bet.
