I don't think either have a true religious claim to the land. It is a fact, however, that people in war are supposed to be able to return home after the fighting and Israel has prevented this for decades, with the US essentially supporting it (and every decision they make). If the Israelis claim they are simply returning (this could be debated) after some 2000 years, then it is absurd to not let Palestinians back after a few decades!! It is also a fact and law that the Occupying Power is not to transfer any part of its population to the territory it occupies, and this Israel has done. The US has spoken out about it some, but refuses to police them and press them like he insists on doing to any other country.
Another thing to think about is that about 3 times as many Palestinians die as Israelis. Many are children and the wounds are to the head and chest, rather than limbs as in accidental, caught in the crossfire type stuff. Israel claims defense and surgically accurate targeted killings, yet the Palestinian civilian death toll is much much higher than the Israeli one. It is evident that Israel targets civilians or takes no precautions, except when the world is paying attention. It has been well documented that soldiers used Palestinians as human shields when they go house to house to arrest hundreds of men regardless of guilt or innocence. Israel drops a 500lb bomb on an apartment block to kill a guy in a wheelchair that it thinks has been planning attacks. What happened to trials? What happened to finding the truth before judgment? Surgical strikes?! Ha!
My opinion is that a one state solution would work best. That way, Palestinians would get a better voice in government, rather than being the victim of policies designed to ethnically cleanse them (transfer, starvation, poverty, closures, assassination, "crossfire") from the area. Israeli officials would never accept that because the Palestinian birth rate is generally higher than the Israelis and over time, Palestinians may gain control over government and payback would be ****.
As it stands now, Israel controls all borders, sea, air, land, closes whole towns including schools on a whim, controls who if any go to which towns, controls who comes into the territories, has made many born in Palestine "visitors" who must try and renew a visa every 3 months (which is based on the mood of the person at the desk). People die at checkpoints due to Israelis denying or delaying entry to receive urgent medical care whether in the next city or in Israel. Israel has effectively shut down the economy and caused a huge humanitarian disaster.
Palestinians deserve rights first and foremost, regardless of statehood. A one state solution would force the two sides to work together rather than continue Israel's control over Palestinians.

from my understanding of the history of the area, before there was the nation of Israel and before the land was a mandate of British,(basically before ww1) there was already a province of a nation (the Ottoman empire). Palestine was under the rule of the Ottoman empire and Jews and Arabs and Christians all live side by side. i believe it is stupid for them to have two different countries, one for Arabs and one for Jews. it worked alright before ww1, why not now? i say we make Israel and Palestine into one country. let all the Palestinian Arab refugee's come back to the land and live side by side in a democratic country.

Under the Ottoman Empire, Jews and Christians and Muslims lived together.
But since the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Muhammed Amin al-Husseini was allied with Hitler during WW2, and vowed to drive all Jews out, there has been continual conflict.
Israel has many Muslim citizens with full rights, but Palestine wants a Jew-free region.
As long as Palestinian leadership wants Israel destroyed, Israel has to defend itself.
