It is all for political survival. It is easier to jump from a sinking ship, than to drown with the captain and have no political future. Personally, defections or not, they hold as much responsibility as Bush The people should remember.

Our country is based on representative government. A fact that upsets people who do not hold majority opinions. A majority of citizens do not support this President for a wide variety of reasons. One of which is his ability to ride roughshod over our constitution. Congress has the responsiblity to oversee the Executive branch, but hasn't because of the concentration of power in the Republican party. With a more balanced split, there will be questions as to the legitmacy of several of his claims of executive powers, such as the claim to be able to wiretap without warrant that hes has now rescinded, since hes not as convinced an opposition Congress will allow his claim to go unchallenged. Bush does not like anything that gets in his way, so its for sure he is not going to like being subject to oversight. All politicians need to get elected, and they can't do it if they persist in unpopular, unworkable, decisions that go against majority will.

If they think running away from Bush is going to get them re-elected as Republicans, they've been hitting the crack-pipe.

The conservative base won't be very pleased with their actions, and they will be hard pressed to win their party nominations.

All I see is cowardice in their actions.

As for generals, I wouldn't hesitate to say that you're not hearing from the majority of them, who do not disagree with Bush.

Probably political survival. It doesn't matter what party a politician belongs to, they're going to sway with the breeze of public opinion in order to survive.
