Aren't men born free? Weren't the primatives free thousands of years ago before the conception of government? Is it possible that the cavemen had more freedoms than the modern day American? Isn't freedom the absence of government? What can be done to restore the sovereignty of the individual?

There would be no foreign threats as there would be no foreign governments.

In a modern world where we all live so closely together there must be some sort of rules and order. Not all governments are good for freedoms or personal growth and education but the concept is one of safety and comparative harmony as we all "work" together. Your other answerer is right- the freedoms you are asking about exist for the wanderer or the sole inhabitant or the commune resident, but that's a single or moderately small number co-existing, not thousands.

The government secures our freedom from foreign threats. It is up to us to secure our freedom from our own government.

Our country was very free until FDR's "New Deal". That ushered in the era of the welfare entitlement society and we have been giving up our freedoms ever since.

The good news is that we can take back our freedom at any time, all we need is the will to elect new representatives. The beauty of the Constitution is that it puts in place the method for us to have a bloodless revolution and complete change of government any time we want it. All we have to do is want it and vote for it.

Sadly, most humans are like children who need Daddy Government to watch over them in order to behave.

So yes, government secures a limited freedom.

How to restore the sovereignty of the individual? Getting proper education. That is, not just amassing facts but learning to think on your own and question whatever information that is provided to you.

The first priority of government is to perpetuate itself. Securing your individual freedom may not even be in the top 10.

no cause the absence of government is anarchy. which is bad. We need a government and we need laws. People can't just go around doing what ever that want. think of the ramifications. So for the good and the bad we need to have one.

If we had no governing body...we would live in chaos...evil beings would continually infringe into our personal space...thus robbing us our freedoms...unfortunately those that are filled with greed, would end up being the governing body...taking over all those that are weaker...Our governing body protects the weak...by having consequences for those that are self serving. Mankind is bent to evil when left to his own devices...
