3 weeks ago, a strange bleeping noise started in our kitchen. It is a high pitched noise, three bleeps in quick succession every 56 seconds. It's only audible in our kitchen, but the noise is unlocatable. It doesn't seem to be coming from the washing machine, dishwasher, smoke alarm etc. The fusebox/mains is in the kitchen but it doesn't seem to be making the noise. At first I thought it was a battery running down, but we have cleared the kitchen out and failed to find anything. I presume it wouldn't go on for 3 weeks anyway! Several friends have been round to try and track down the source and have all failed. We have also turned the power off at the mains to see whether it was mains generated and the beeping continued. At one point, we've had 4 people in the kitchen trying to triangulate onto the source and failed! Any ideas as to what to look for or suggestions as to how we can get to the bottom of this or what it might be? Could it be something to do with the fuse box?

sounds like a smoke alarm with a battery going dead to me. But if you have an older house alarm system that does not have voice, it could be like a house alarm sensor (window, door, motion) with a battery that is going dead.

fuse boxes don't make beeps. does your fridge have a water dispenser in it some have signal for filter replacement. It is some battery operated device or a device with battery backup. .A 3 beep 1 minute pause is usually the sign of a detector that has previously activated or one that is tied in series with a detector in another location, if it is not a detector in the kitchen (the usual suspect) , do you have any kitchen gadgets in the drawers that have batteries. "timers, clocks" etc? If all that fails make sure the plumber did not get stuck under the sink and it is his wife calling his cell phone.

Check the attic for a smoke detector, or the timer on the stove, if you did not pull the big breaker in the fuse box.
I have a stetho scope in my garage, it has a probe, believe me it will locate all kinds of strange sounds. It works on the same principal as the one the Doctor uses.
