The left side equals 0, Does that mean the whole problem is automatically 0?

no, it means all solutions. when you have an equation where, for example, it ends up as 0=0 or 5=5, that is all solutions. if it ends up as something like 3=7 or 0=4, that is no solution.

both sides = 0 but I think your s'posta show your work like this:

3y-8y+5y = 3-9+6
-5y+5y = -6+6
y = 0
