why did college sports only come around in the 1800's?

Before the 1800s, most sports, especially team sports, hadn't even been invented yet. Colleges mainly were learning institutions and extra-curricular activities such as sports didn't exist.

They had to wait for technology to catch up so they could sell commercials.

b/c before that there were not enough colleges in close proximity to play eachother.
