Because people have the tendency to learn things by rote right from their childhood days. Mathematics involves logic, algorithms and not necessarily rote learning. Its the language in which God has created the universe. Majority of us fear God and therefore simply his language of creation.

Because math problems are right or wrong. You can BS your way to a B in lit courses, but if you don't know the math you need, or can't see the way to do something in math, it is just wrong.
The other problem is the way it is taught. So many teachers don't really know math - they memorize the formulae they need to get through, and teach their students the same way. In math you absolutely do *not* want to memorize lots of formulae, you want to be familiar with a basic set. Once people grit their teeth and try to get through a course by working hard they are doomed in math.
Math goes through a big change in high school. Before that it is cookbook - you learn arithmetic and algebraic manipulation, and anyone can follow the rules to solve problems. Once you start doing proofs it becomes much more open ended, and the techniques that have been successful for elementary school are now completely inappropriate.
In a way it is like learning a foreign language. You can study hard and learn all the vocabulary and the grammar rules, but that does not help you speaking. To speak and listen you need to be able to apply what you have learned, and this is a skill you can only get through trying and failing, not from studying hard. Having a huge vocabulary that you have not mastered is not as good as having a great grasp of 100 basic words.

Most people fear Mathematics cos it requires a lot of mental work and it is application oriented. You need to apply concepts (like Theorems) to obtain the results. Since it involves a lot of mental stress, I guess most people fear it.

I don't consciously fear it. But when I sit down and try to do some problems I get panicky. Especially with word problems. I just seem to lose my focus and concentration, I get dizzy and even feel nauseus sometimes. I seem to have math anxiety. Maybe It's from when I was a kid and my 8th grade math teacher calling me to the front of the class and embarrassing me when I didn't know an answer.

Nearly 90% of the human population avoid to think deeply. I don't know why! even myself afraid of hard calculations. May be I am not interested with the subject or lazy to crush my mind. I conclude this subject needs a good memory that aforesaid percentage don't have.

THERE ARE THREE BASIC CAUSES BEHIND IT-
1. THE SUBJECT TAUGHT IN WRONG WAY
2.BECAUSE OF LAZINESS SOME DON'T WANT TO DEVOTE TIME & PATIENCE FOR IT.
3.SOME OF US FEAR TO FACE THE REALITY & IT'S THE ONLY SUBJECT WHICH PROVES YOUR MENTAL CAPASITY,& LOGICAL WAY OF THINKING.
