Diversity is the best answer. You see, if we all used Mcafee (for example), then the virus that can attack Mcafee will infect us all. But with diversity, someone that is using Mcafee might TRY to pass it along to someone that has Avast, and it stops there.
So you see, it is best that everyone pick something different. For all of us, that diversity is our BEST defense.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

The best, and most user friendly, in my opinion is definately Mcafee. I would get the moat up to date version as well. I had a few other antivirus softwares and with each I had gotten virus' still. I have had Mcafee for 4 years now, and I to this day have not had any virus problems. This includes when I accidentally downloaded a file with an attached virus and Mcafee deleted it immediately for me.

F-Secure Anti-Virus Client Security. You could go for Avast Pro, too. Although unknown among the paid-for anti-viruses, it provides rock-solid protection in areas that even Kaspersky doesn't cover. Stay away from Norton. AVG's professional version is hardly any different from the free version.

AVG & Avast are truly awful programs - only install these if you really cannot afford to pay for decent protection.
To supplement JibbarJabber's test results, here's another Antivirus / PC Security test which is updated hourly:

Hopefully this will help you decide. Personally I've used Prevx1 for over a year now which gets a strong recommendation from me.

I Would Recommend Norton 360 Version 6 Because: * PCMag Editors Choice Pros: Remote Management. Self-healing. Very good antivirus. Intelligent firewall. Accurate antispam. Excellent antiphishing. Password management and form-filling now portable, Web-accessible. 2GB online backup; local backup too. Useful tuneup features. Con: Parental Controls Cost Extra Bottom Line Norton 360 Version 6.0 gives you all the same protective features as Norton Internet Security 2012, with a friendlier face. You also get flexible backup, including 2GB of online storage. Tuneup features are also useful, especially the diagnostic report. This full-featured suite is definitely a good choice.

They are all about the same. AVG is one of the PC Magazine's choice. If you get Norton or McAfee on your computer, you will have a devil of a time getting rid of it. F-Secure is also supposed to be good.
