Columbus or Albany Georgia, not the cities themselves, but the surrounding communities.

Texas. Much warmer than Michigan but yet still has a little touch of seasonal differences so you wouldn't be too homesick. Check out small communities that are within an hour's drive from the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitain area: Mansfield (an old small town with expanding modern subdivisions). Waxahachie (famous for historic Victorian homes. The movies Tender Mercies with Robert Duval and Tess Harper and Places in the Heart with Sally Field , Ed Harris and Danny Gover were filmed here) and Granburry (historic town square, beautiful lake...)

We moved to this area from the Northeast some years ago, just love it here and will never leave. Come on down for a visit and look around...

I would avoid South Florida(from Tampa south) Moved here (Sarasota- Bradenton area)from the northeast two years ago and can't even think about buying a house because the prices are so high. Probably won't be staying much longer. I would try the Carolinas or Tennessee. Tennessee probably has a lower cost of living than the Carolina's( no state income tax). Moderate climate, hot in the summers and cool in the winters. I think it would be a good mix considering you're from Michigan.

I lived in southwest florida for the first 23 years of my life...It's pretty easy going and does'nt have the crime like the eastern part of the state does. I lived in Punta Gorda and back in '02 or something it got voted the best small town in the south by money maginize but it's an OLD person place believe me and that area is still rebuilding after hurricane charlie hit it 2 years ago...Sarasota and Fort Myers are nice places but are a lil larger (ft. myers has a international airport) The greatest small town I've ever been to is a place called Maggie Valley in North Carolina, people were so friendly, area was goregeous but very affordable and they've got THE greatest breakfast in the worlds...all the food in every restaurant I think is homemade!

If you want a metro-type place in a small town I would check out Arizona, New Mexico.
The southeastern towns seem kind of small minded.
The best way to check is to visit first and check out the diversity.

I would say New Braunfels Texas...its right in between Austin and San Antonio, its not too big and its not too small. There are alot of cool things to do that arent too expensive and the people are very Friendly

we moved from MA to SW Fl.....I wanted Houston my hubby wanted Florida because his family is here......the weather is beautiful but honestly with the Gov. and technology it is like we moved back into the 90s......people I know that have lived in the Houston area and in SW FL have said Houston is much better and the houses are much cheaper and I read that Sugarland is the #3 town to live in...I do not know the exact reason why, I do know after 2-3 years people who move here leave....when I was younger I lived in Virginia and No. Carolina and hated it.
