Per capita, I think Japan has more bicycle riders than the USA & possibly other countries. I've been living here for a while and I've noticed that a great many riders don't signal with their bells. Why is that? Also, has anyone else noticed this?

geez..wetdream! You don't have to be so f....in rude! I know about many of the Japanese customs but not ringing a bell to avoid an accident goes against logic, EINSTEN!!

Because, in Japan, noise is viewed as an aberration. You don't talk loadly on trains, you speak in a low voice when asking a question and you don't blow your horn or ring your bell in traffic unless it's really required. Pick up a book on local customs and read it!

Most seniors ring their bells loud or .if you are waiting in a bus stations, you can hear bike bells ringing loud behind..people who are in rush....and there are loud passengers on the trains during nights,.drunks, teens, etc. ?

Reason why I didn't ring my bell when I was in Japan? because it seemed annoying to them..so I just waited patiently,, nothing I can do, it happens that they think they have the right..ever seen group of kids or people walking on the streets ignoring bycicles or vehicles coming behind, people busy with cellphones? well.. you will get used to these.
Drivers are more safety and the streetwalkers think they are not responsible for their own safety..and there are rude bicycle riders too with cp,. so just think of being safe in either way even the bells don't ring. I guess bike riders yield to pedestrians more without ringing the bell for courtesy.
Read the post below regarding this.

yeah I dont think I ever rang my bell either, I dont know why not, its kind of like "Oi get out of my way!" which I wouldnt really say... I never really got rung at either, I never really thought about it until I saw your post, but its true.
heres another question, if you open up the door for an old woman, why will she refuse to go through that door, but open the other one herself! haha. what a joke.

Are you JOKING??? The ONLY people here in Japan who I have NEVER known to ring their bicycle bells are my husband and myself - because we don't HAVE bells on our bikes! Jeez - wherever I go I get ringing in my ears from the jangling of everyone else's bicycle bells! There's even one old man around here, he saves himself strenuous effort by just hanging an ordinary BELL from his bike - so it jangles constantly while he rides and everyone can hear him from at least 20 metres away!

And the REASON we don't have bells on our bikes? My Japanese husband gets SO infuriated by the way everyone jangles their bells in such a RUDE way (HIS opinion - not MINE!) that he refuses to have a bell on his bike ... and I don't put one on my OWN bike because I find it amusing to cycle really SLOWLY behind people to see how long it takes them to notice me...! It's also an education to find out how slow I can go without falling off...!!
