Did you know that? Even though he was a Confederate, I believe he was still a great, honorable man. So Happy 200th Birthday, Mr. Lee!

Yes, Happy Birthday Robert E. Lee, in my eyes one of the greatest men in American history, he was a very wise man, probably the greatest soldier in American history, one of the United States great educators, and a brilliant engineer. His feets were many, though it is too bad he never served in political office as he was often begged too, he would have performed a great service to the rebuilding of the south, though it probably would have shortened his life. He most certainly would have been President of the Confederacy had they won, he was anti-slavery, and the best general of the civil war. Even his accomplishments serving his country in the Mexican war made him a national hero.

Yes, happy birthday to a great southern gentleman and statesman, who was against slavery, owned no slaves, and joined the Confederacy to protect his homeland, as did 80% of Confederate army veterans. Don't forget, before the Civil War he was top general in the United States Army! It's too bad most people see the Civil War as a war about slavery, because Abraham Lincoln brought slavery in as an issue when Northern support for his invasion of the South was waning. Read your history books, folks. Slavery was wrong, a stain on the history of our country, but only a small percentage of Southerners supported it or owned slaves (the rich landowners). After the Civil War, Robert E. Lee did much to help the country heal the divisions left over from the war. I would never take away the honor Martin Luther King deserves, it's too bad some minorities can't let whites honor someone important in the history of our country without saying it's a slap in the face to them! Can't we get over it?

I knew at least 1 or 2 people with no knowledge of history would respond to this question, so I'll put forth a few facts 1. Lee was against slavery, he joined the confederate side because his homeland was attacked. 2. US Grant was in favor of slavery and said "If I thought for one moment this war was about slavery I would surrender my sword to the other side" 3. The bulk of the confederate states seceeded befor Lincoln was even elected because they were in favor of low tariff trade with Europe. Slavery had nothing to do with the war.

We should take time to thank him for allowing us to take over his beautiful piece of property that is now a national landmark known as Arlington National Cemetery.
He was in the U.S. Army for several years before defecting to the south.
Glad to see people keeping up on their history.

Happy Birthday to a good man. no matter what one's personal feelings are towards War which I personally hate there were many brave men who fought for what they believed was right. had many Lodge Brothers on each side and they lived up to their obligations to each other in spite of political differences.

No, he sucks. the stupid south lost the war. Slavery is terrible. I now live in the south, which im glad has no slaves. So, if he was fighting for slavery, he was fighting for the devil and deserves no such congratulations.
