I've just gotten my degree in journalism but the part of the field I want to get into (photojournalism) has few jobs and is very competitive. I can easily get a job in another field, so was considering taking a different job to get by while I still looked for a photojournalism position. But does it look bad to have a job listed on your resume that you've only recently started? Or does it look worse to be currently unemployed? Thanks!!

Thanks for the responses. I guess the other information is that I'm trying to pay off debt, and the money I had been saving for that purpose I'm now having to live from. And, my health insurance from my last job at the university (teaching) ends in about a month.

I will leave my current employment and I will be honest about it.... Anyhow you are getting some kind of experience... plus you can negotiate terms/benefits better because you are not desperate to get a job

It's okay to look for a job while working somewhere, as long as you don't let your employer know.....it also looks better if you are currently working but seeking something more along the lines of your studies....being unemployed, unless just fresh out of school is not bad but not good either.....so Good Luck and hope you find the job that you really want then you won't have to feel guilty...

Hi there,
I work in HR and this is not a good plan. Recruiters won't want to hire you and risk that you'll bail out on them too. It makes you look like you don't know what you want to do, and that you're willing to waste everyone's time. It takes time and effort to hire someone, and you need them to stay. Go for the job you want, write a great cover letter, and try to make contacts. Don't waste time and burn bridges somewhere else. We all need a job, so I understand that, but try for one that you think you'll at least stay at a while. If you do get one, the best idea is to stay there a year or two at the very least. This way you gain work experience, and make contacts, so that you can go for your preferred job.

By taking a job in another field, shows you are an open, motivated person. it shows you aren't "lazy, just waiting for the perfect job"
If the line of work you want is difficult to get into, any prospective employer will understand. Sometimes you have to "earn" your way into certain positions.

I own a middle size company, when i look at a resume for new employees that is one factor to check, maybe on the interview you can explain the reason for short time in a job, however it doesn't look good to change jobs so quickly shows lack of stability.
Good luck....

Currently unemployed means you have full availability. And that's what many companies look for nowadays.

It';s better to gho after the job you want, even if it's far away and would involve a move.

I don't think it will matter to your potential employer, but it might make your current employer upset if he knows your looking.
