Downing street has said we will not get a referndum on accepting a European Constitution

The parliamentary system is only democratic in that we elect our MPs. It has no provision for direct voting by the people on issues (i.e. referenda).

Therefore it might be desirable to hold a referendum on such an important constitutional issue but it is not un-democratic not to do so.

Check what democracy means in a good dictionary. England has NEVER been a true democracy although it's closer than an "autocratic" state.

The nearest that we have is an elected dictatorship where we can evict our leaders every 5 years but in the meantime they can literally do what they want.

Be more concerned with encroaching facshist powers such as ID cards, council officers inspections of your home (for council tax valuations - yes, it's coming), motor car GPS chipping (for road tolls, yeah right!), European common arrest warrant, phone and Internet taps, etc etc.

Even Margaret Thatcher never went as far as this Labour Party.

The Real Big Brother is watching YOU already!!!

The reason Downing Street will not allow a referendum on accepting a European Constitution is because here in UK we have a parliamentary system of government. We elected our representatives and expect them to get on with the job we have chosen them to do.

Personally I cannot see anything wrong with the system we have. In all probability, what is contained in the European Constitution will be better, an improvement, on what we've already got.

That is because Blair has ambitions on being the 1st European President! Like that will really ever happen. He is living in Cherie's skid marked knickers, which she probably also stole from a charity, if he thinks the French and German's would EVER let him have a say on what goes in their respective countries. They both treat him with comtempt and what does he do, go around pleasing them by pledging billions of UK tax payers money to help their failing economy!

As long as we have HM the Queen and others, all talk of democracy will result in the offender being arrested and taken to a "quiet" place. Its Marshall law out there and you should be glad you have her Maj to look after you. Any more of this new fangled democracy rubbish will make her mad.

Have they really said that?
That should be big news. I'm surprised because Blair promised us a referendum.
We have European elections so unfortunately this is democracy in action. I don't like it. That's why I voted UKIP in the last European elections.

For the last 50 or so years, I believe we have slowly been loosing our state of democracy, via politicions and the so called do gooders of this country of ours. We are being forced to bow to just about every bugger else including those from oversees....Christ, oh to put back the clock, and give back to those who fought for freedom and democracy in W.W.1and2 before they all pass away hurt and frustrated...

Yes we are still a democracy. Unfortunately the people that we democratically elect seem to forget what they were elected for once they start coining in their obscene wages and expenses.
