If it's new and you've had it less than a couple of weeks go back to the shop that sold it to you. You're probably covered by (in the UK) the sales of goods act and theres bound to be similar legislation in the US. The goods as sold are not fit for purpose so they are required to replace them with ones that work. You DO NOT have to accept a repair on the one you bought if it's brand new.
DO NOT try to fix it yourself, go back to the shop.
If it's second hand or you've had it for ages, you may have to accept a warranty repair.
If you don't have a warranty, try booting in safe mode (I can never remember if you have to hit F5 or F8...) and see if you can see the display then. If you can the screen resolution is set wrong for the laptop display... you can reset it to something that is right for the laptop.

Here are a few options for you:
1) If you can see an image, but it's just very faint, then your inverter is shot. Replacing this is simple and will cost about $100.
2) It could also be your backlight, which is a long skinny blub at the bottom of your LCD screen, which provides the light. You should try hooking an external monitor up to your laptop and see what happens. If you still don't get an image, it's probably a hardware issue, i.e video card ect.
3) If you determine the problem to be with your backlight, then it's rather hard to replace, and most repair shops won't do this type of job. It's painfully hard. In this case, you should replace the screen. http://www.screentekinc.com has good prices on LCD screens. The laptop maker will charge you just enough to make you go ahead and buy a new laptop.
4) Of course, before you do any of the above, make sure you laptop isn't under warranty.
Good luck.

If you have warranty then just go back to the dealership and tell them. Else this is just a problem with Windows, its corrupt. Sometimes booting in safe mode will do, this is done by pressing F8 as soon as POST is complete. Then go to safemode, the screen will then show the files being loaded, if there is a problem it will get stuck somewhere generally at a file called MUP.SYS, if it does give it about 3-4 min and if its still there, Sad to say u will have to run windows setup, oh yeah unless of course you know to replace the damaged file. Sometimes this can happen due to USB devices in that case remove all USB devices and restart.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
