I'll call my boss Andrew, for anonymity.

I do a lot of temporary work and sometimes go back to the same placement (as I get asked to go back). My boss' wife came into the office one day (never met her before) and I greeted her and shook her hand. The first 2 things she said were, "You know that Andrew is very pleased with his permanent secretary". And so I just shook it off and thought nothing of it, as I couldn't really care less, as I love temping. The next thing she said was, "Don't you ever get asked to leave, if you do something wrong?" I nearly fell off my seat, as it came as such a surprise. I went all red and just said, "No".

Andrew's permanent secretary does ask me back, when she takes leave, so why did his wife say these things to me?

Are you sleeping with your boss?

What a very unpleasant woman. Sounds like your situation suits all - your boss is happy for you to be the temp when his secretary is away, as is she, and you enjoy the placement as and when it comes. So, the wife has no business making any comment at all. Silly woman. I wouldn't take it to heart. If you weren't a good temp you wouldn't keep being asked back! Let this wash over you and don't worry, if she does it again, then have a word with the permanent secretary, in case she can shed some light, or perhaps even mention it to the boss if it gets any more upsetting. Chin up!!

"Andrews" permanent secretary must pose no threat to his wife, and he probably doesn't speak of her often, you on the other hand pose a threat to her and he has spoken of you at home, otherwise she wouldn't have just shown up at his job to "check you out" don't say anything to her, she could be looking for an excuse to get you fired or give you a bad rep.
Just be as polite to her as you would be any stranger who comes into your office. Think of it as, she's an insecure baby who has to hold onto her man through intimidation.. Just do the job you were hired to do.

Sounds like the woman was one of the Mean Girls! Seriously, now, did she ever have a small stroke? Some people lose their capacity to self-edit...
No? OK then, tell your boss to "fire" her ***! He's gettin' it worse at home!

Sounds like the wife is insecure. I would take it as she feels threatened by your abilities or your appearance.

sounds like she is jealous of you. Try to ignore her. It sounds like she could find a way to get rid of you if she wanted.
