My friend and I did a qualitative paper on this subject post 9/11 many years back for our Sociology department. What we found was this: The older generation (who had been through Pearl Harbor, WW11, etc. ) was able to look at the group of people and say "We used to think Japanese were bad people but they're not. " That generation is more able to see it is the actions of a few that harm us all though they are suspicious and cautious. The yuppies/ middle aged people had the harshest view of Muslims as a whole. They didn't want to talk about it, there was no rationalle.
The younger generation falls into the trap of generally saying they don't trust Muslims but when they find out they know one personally are suddenly okay with it all. They're more open to individuals in that group than any of the other groups.
Our study was done in the South (Texas, Arkansas). People were interviewed within 1 year of the events.
OVERALL, Being a muslim would very probably be a private thing for you to hold dear to you. Despite everyone's stereotyping, the majority of people will leave well enough alone. However, fear leads to a lot of sad behaviors. I hate to say this but you may want to play it safe and tell only those you choose to tell, not everyone.I don't think you'll be judged by skin color for being of middle eastern descent.
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

I wish I could speak for all Americans, but I can't. I would welcome you. I do care about your religion, because I care about your salvation, but I am not the type to try and beat it into you. I do worry about terrorist, but I think that our national security is pretty good right now and if you were really a danger, then they probably wouldn't even let you past the airport security. As for getting a job, I'm not an employer, however, if you worked at a daycare where I take my children too, that would not stop me from taking my children there. If you moved next door to me, I would not move. I owe to much money to move. I probably would not be very friendly at first because of the fact that I am very shy and fat and I figure that you wouldn't want to talk to me anyway so I wouldn't want to bother you or put you on the spot. However, if you started the conversation, then I would be eager to continue it. And if you didn't mind dogs and kids, then we would probably invited you over for pizza and a movie some Friday evening.
But like I said, I can't speak for all American's. Sorry.....

Well, you are right that there's not too much of a problem if you're not aggressive with your religion or harmful to others. The problem you would ecncounter is that of being non-American. There is a lot of strife right now about people who are not American who come here and add to the population of a country in poor economic times, taking jobs away from Americans who need to support themselves and their families.

Brother or sis please don't come here and if you do move to Deerborn, Michigan. There's a lot of Muslims there. Yes our brothers and sisters are the target of hate crimes, we have our cars vandalized, we get stopped in the airports and checked very intensivly by security, our mosques are being bombed, and the FBI is always checking out the mosques in the USA. Our homes are vandalized. The women are stared at for wearing hijab and abaya. My husband and I are in the USA right now and it sucks.

I for one do not hate or dislike Muslims. We are all people. God tells us to Love On Another, I try to do this. Besides If I were to hate Muslims, I would also be hating, three of my cousins. They are half Arabic.
Yes, there are some who hate Muslims and those who do not. Do not let those people discourage you from coming to America.
You will most likely run into those who fear and or hate you. If you have friends or relatives here, contact them. May wish to visit before moving here.
Either way, I pray you will be received with Peace, Respect and Openness by more people here; than be hated.

Yes my friend, I have no doubt in my mind that they are. Of course it is ignorance but I may not think that people treat them so bad. I have an impression that the US govt may be different than the people so the people might treat muslims in a good way. I wish you luck and if you have any problems, come straight back to where you are. Bon Voyage. Take care.

Gee when Muslims want to kill Solmon Rusdie for things he says in free speech in a book, then why should we tell you how we really feel without fear of being put on a death list???? Yes Muslims live here, work here and even sometimes have American friends here. But isn't it like the sheep living with a wolf who maybe isn't hungry today?

Anyone is welcome here. How well will you be treated? People will not trust you, not like you, not be friendly and generally treat you with fear and loathing. If you are willing to live with people treating you like that come on down.
This is not the politically correct answer. But it is the way most Americans feel.
