You can be tolerant of something and not respect it.

Tolerance is not the same as respect, it is of course a component of respect. Eg: It would be impossible to say you have respect for a person if you were not willing to tolerate them having a different opinion to you.

Tolerance is not respect. That said, I must add that a society which promotes tolerance will eventually evolve into a society where differences are in fact respected.
So much of our attitudes are legacies left to us from former generations that if those negative manifestations of intolerance are not overtly promoted, they lose potency over time and over generations.
Tolerance may not be the panacea to social justice, but it's a strong catalyst.
(Terrific question. Thank you for asking it)

One has nothing to do with the other. I am a very tolerant person, I can put up with many things, without even liking them. Respect is some thing quite different, people have to earn respect from another person and when they do earn it, it is given willingly.

'Tolerating' someone means, for me, that you 'put-up-with', which is not the same as 'respect' where one has an understanding and empathy towards someone's being and beliefs.
In tolerating someone, you may not like their nature, behaviour or even religion. But you'll 'grind away' putting up (tolerating) with them.
Respect also equals acceptance and acknowledging the differences between people and why they are, who they are.

I think the problem with respect is that a lot of the time it isn't mutual and can be very frustrating which makes one less tolerant.

tolerance and respect are divided, to "tolerate" some one or something can be to Ignore its existence eg, fear makes us tolerant we all hear stories of large gangs and and how in some cases the community "tolerates them for fear of fuelling a attack

If a gang had the respect of the community no one would have cause to fear them the wider community police, etc wouldn't have cause to view any incident as being attributed to there gang and so on

when going on long motorway hikes you tolerate other traffic you wouldn't say you respect it

and last of all you would say you respect a doctor or a professional you wouldn't say you tolerate him

Tolerance is just putting up with something you don't like. Respect is honoring something.
