The words "cheap" and "london" do not go together, especially central london.

You may be better off looking for a person who runs B&B from their house for that price. I will be very surprised if you get a room in a hotel for £50

I stayed at a Comfort Inn in Notting Hill a couple years back. The service was great, there was a 24 hour bar, the only one in London. The Tube was literally right across the street. But as far as getting something for 50 a night, not sure if you are going to find any where decent. But London was a lot of fun. Wish I could go back and if I could I would stay at the same place. I met so many great people there.

I have been in the Royal National Hotel in Central London very near Russel Square. This cost me £55 a night including breakfast. I recommend this hotel.

If your budget is really limited to only 50 pounds, stay at the Terstan Hotel (formerly named Garden View) in Kensington/Earl's Court. Certainly the neighbourhood is excellent and it is conveniently located close to the Earl's Court tube station where the Piccadilly line runs to Heathrow.

It is very basic, but you'll get a bathroom (small) in the room. There are many other hotels in that area that have specials around 50 pounds. It is the best area for low-cost hotels in a very attractive location.

I use www.hoteldoorman.com to book. Search hotels by tube using "Earl's Court".

I think you will struggle to find good cheap hotels in central London. However, the Visit London website http://www.visitlondon.co.uk/ always seems to advertise good rates at good hotels (although I don't know anybody who has used the site to book hotels so am unsure of whether the rates are obtainable). Alternatively Smooth Hound Systems http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ will have guesthouses around London listed.
