My favorite is the third series.

The Goodbyee one was the first time a comedic series made me cry. In most of the others he miraculously escaped death, and all through the third series he kept himself and his friends from having to go over the top. Except at the very last. As he was checking the load in his revolver and the perpetually goofy upper class twit was saying "you know what, I'm scared" for the only time in the series, the shelling stopped, Captain Darling said It's over, we made it, 1914 to 1917 and Blackadder said no, it was so their own artillery wouldn't be shelling them as they went over, it was more sporting that way..

I used to think, when i was a kid, in foolish romantic terms about flying aces and such,

Now I just see it as mass murder combined with mass suicide.

Blackadder Goes Forth helps me deal with it a little.
And we needed it and still do, the war now is the same war, the issues were never resolved.

The controlled madness of Mr Atkins comedy is a good escape valve, that can keep us from going into the real madness. True insanity isn't fun. All the mental patients I know never smile.

It's brilliant, I agree. Except for the first series, which is not so funny.
