Obviously you havent played cricket. Because as the game is played in the middle of summer it causes the outfield to become very dry. So when you have to slide to stop the ball the trousers help protect the skin on your legs. Althought that isn`t always affective. But as the game began in England and was played by gentlemen, they started a tradition of wearing trousers so they would look smart on the field. This tradition continues today.

I guess the reason is the traditions of the game. Initially it was also long sleeve shirts, but players began to roll them up, so short sleeve shirts came in.
I guess another reason is leg protection - I wouldnt want to slide around the ground in shorts, especially in the sub continent, it would kill your legs!!
As a note to your idea about shorts, and following on from an answer referring to wearing shorts in Australian cricket, the Victorian team actually trialled shorts as part of the uniform for the then Mercantile Mutual Cup (now Ford Ranger Cup - domestic one day comp) in 1994/95, however it did not kick on...probably due to tradition, practicality, and also now doubt to hide the pasty white legs and chicken legs some players had!!
