Undergraduate is the very first degree you obtain in a field.While postgraduate is the second degree you obtain in the same field.Postgraduate often involves research and it requires some basic knowledge which one obtains after completing their undergraduate degree.Postgraduate studies gives you the option of studying part time while undergraduate often involves full time course.

Undergraduate: This means that the student earns his/her bachelor degree. Postgraduate: This means that the student earns his/her master degree, phd, m.d. or j.d. Basically after you have finished undergraduate level and earned your bachelor degree, you are a "graduate" so then, if you decide to continue your education, they call it "post graduate." Some choose masters, some choose Phd, some choose law school or medical school.

postgraduate have the above and are going on to get a MA or PHD etc

Undergraduate= a student in a university or college who has not received a first, esp. a bachelor's, degree.
Postgraduate= a student who is taking advanced work after graduation, as from a high school or college

undergraduates are on their first degree... e.g. just left school... postgraduates have already graduated with a degree at least once before so then go on to do masters or PHDs.
