In our house we have an old cellar which, 12 years ago was tanked out with bitumen and is now used as my study. We had a point under the stairs where the emulsion paint bubbled, so when it was decorated, some protective stuff was put under the paint under the stairs. However, the damp has broken through again and I don't know what to do next.

You have to find the source of the damp I'm afraid before you can rectify the problem!

If the houses are all in a row and have cellars the damp may be coming from someone else's property - you could be redecorating for an eternity and never solve the problem!

Alternatively, the cause of the damp may be in your house - pipes may be seeping somewhere else and draining down - pipes may be hidden in the walls (I've seen that before)!

Whatever the cause you need to find the problem first!
