when prisoners under sentence of death are given the choice between life in prison and execution,99 per cent of them choose life imprisonment.Since one is most deterred by what one most fear,it is evident that the threat of the death penalty is more likely to deter most potential murdeers than is the threat of life imprisonment.....

People convicted of murder are not given such a choice.
The death penalty is not a deterrent. States with the death penalty have higher homicide rates than states that do not have it. Most people who kill do not think they will be caught (let alone executed), that is, if they think at all.
Potential murderers are deterred by the threat of being caught and spending years in prison. Others who contemplate murder do not do it because they know it is wrong.
You should know that life without parole is on the books in more and more states. It means exactly what it says. Being locked up in a tiny cell for 23 hours of the day, for the rest of one's life, is no picnic. Some murderers actually prefer the death sentence.

Not really; most murderers don't take punishment into consideration because they're psychopathic and/or they don't expect to get caught. Many believe, with some justification, that they'll be able to escape capital punishment by some means or other anyway. Personally I see capital punishment more as a form of pest control, but history also shows that people *have* been wrongly executed. There's a good reason this is a thorny topic.

In the first place, I don't think if a person has been sentenced to Death, that they are given a choice of what they prefer, once the sentence is handed down there can only be appeals to that sentence.
but you would think that knowing that the death penalty dose exist that it would deter crimes that would carry that sentence.

Is your question "then why do you need death penalty"?.
There are some people that are to be killed otherwise they will keep killing others. These are with murderous intentions that cna't be changed. Only for them death penalty is to be imposed. Rest of them can live in the prisions.

No, I totally disagree,I think they choose life imprisonment with the slim chance of being pardoned. Death is a finality, once it's over, it's over............at least if there is a breath in someones body, there is a chance, there is always a chance......anyone agree???????
