I am confused as to the use of flexible gas lines when connecting the furnace in my home to the main gas feed line.Is it better to make the connection with solid black pipe?

READ the manufactures guideline for the furnace. It should not be a problem though as theses lines have a wire mesh woven in them. Check this out very carefully before you do anything else. Call the gas Company and ask them if you are concerned, and they will come out and do an Inspection FREE if you request it.

I am replacing a flexible gas line to my clothes dryer. I see that 1/2 is recommended for dryer, but the existing flexible hose comes with a 5/8" fitting that connects to the supply line coming from the wall and is reduced to 3/8" at the dryer connection point. The Flexible Gas line that has a 5/8 OD, is recommended for a Furnace/Range connection, but it is the same size as the one that I am replacing. Would this be safe to install (would the gas supply be to great for the dryer to handle)?

This is acceptable If you use this buy it your self and install it do not turn it on let the gas company inspect it and turn it on! If you turn it on your insurance will not pay in case of a fire. If you buy the solid black pipe you have to buy a piece that is way more than you need plus elbows every thing has to be threaded also you need pipe fitting compound you end up paying more than you need too! But it is your choice

you can use flex but make sure its not from china and is stainless steel we are required in the state of cali to use flex line due to high risk of earth quakes but make sure line is a pproved for gas use.Solid pipe when they bend they break at the tread and flex does not! Its all up to you check you local gas laws!
