The fact that sex is a natural act and feels good. Sexual activity has plenty of emotional, physical and psychological benefits whether outside or inside of marriage. A more interesting question would be what causes the drive to behave in irresponsible, negative or unsafe sexual activity whether it be in or outside of marriage? Although, I think there is enough attention given to the outside of marriage sexual activity of people, but not enough given to irresponsible, negative or unsafe sexual activity inside of marriage. Of course, there are various societal reasons for this over attention given to 'fornication'.

I think what's behind this is the inner animal drive in a person. Good man Freud says that man's innate drives are sex and aggression, and most of all, the youth of today is actually driven by raging hormones and the curiosity of how it feels to do the deed. When it applies to adults, let's just say that sex is more of the ultimate expression of love that does not necessarily require marriage. Also the fact that many people are already doing it kinda makes others do it due to the "Everybody's doing it, so let's do it" kind of mentality.

Our society is constantly changing, and we're at an era where the people's motto is, "If it feels good, then just do it." For example, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. People have just loosened up. It's what took us here in 2007 that influences how we are today, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s. It keeps building up, and now, we're here today. It's just the way that our society shaped.

Curiosity, and the natural urge to discover the unseen! Sometimes it's the strongly felt need to assert oneself, prove oneself, and to challenge and defy everything and everybody around! Sometimes, it is just the 'chemistry' between two adults, who may not realise that they are adults, but want to find out if!

this question doesn't cover all people. Some people never marry (usually career motivated), so when they have sex ,it can never be called premarital.

a no. of factors which my include;
peer pressure to do it and be 'in' with he crowd,
desires and urges that are not kept in check,
adventurism, and a desire to know more,
some are just addicted, and don't know any better,
some are plain ignorant about abstinenece until marriage,
some have been told it keeps them younger so they do it,
and others think if they dont have sex their partner will not stay with them until marriage...........and on and on and on
