The long block is the engine block, pistons, rings and rods, crank shaft and bearings, timing chain, cam, and cylinder head assemblies.
Basically, the long block is the whole engine without the intake and exhaust manifolds.

If the car needs a long block overhaul, the engine is no good. The piston rings, bearings, valves, cam, crank, push rods, block... everything and anything could be bad.
Since you had to ask this question, I'll assume you cannot do the work yourself.

Buy another car.

Get the old engine out. Rent a cherry picker, call someone that has swapped an engine. Remove everything the rebuilder would not want on the core swap. i.e. alternator, brackets, starter, etc.
Get an already rebuilt and guaranteed longblock delivered to you from-

or

The old engine will be picked up as a core exchange.

You can also look for another 225 slant six on a car, see it run, buy the inexpensive car and swap the engine.

The car is a good one, you just have to rebuild, or i would replace the engine. To rebuild the slant 6 will cost between 1-2 thousand.... not 6, my dad just bought a new crate engine from jasper a chevy 350 with 300 horsepower for $3000....... $6000 for a slant 6...LOL! ok..... seriously, find a used 318 and throw it in there, you should be able to get a used one for 1-1.5 K

The block is the heart of you engine where pistons, rings, rods...are located, it's the core. Most likely is cracked and leaking lubricants (antifreeze, oil). As stated "it's junk" you'll end up putting a new engine in an old car, ultimately you are buying the body.
