.rar files are zipped files that have been compressed by a software called Winrar. You can download a copy from http://www.winrar.com, install the software, unzip the files and then play your media files in the player that you use.

.rar extentions are a type of compressed file like a .zip. You need to extract the file before you know what it is. Winrar has a free trial version version you can download.
