If you are wearing civilian clothes, and are not in the military, it is acceptable to wear any type of rank you want (though it's in bad taste if you didn't earn it yourself). Wearing a family member's earned rank (on civilian clothing) is acceptable as a tribute to that person's sacrifice and achievement. What you want to ask yourself is why do you want to wear the insignia? Is it to honor your Grandfather's service, or is it because you think it would make a cool pin or a good conversation piece. I'm a veteran, and although I think it's a little tacky when civilians wear military medals/badges/honors without the right intent, it is also the right of every civilian to do so (as long as there is no attempt at impersonation), you can wear whatever you want, but try to think how an Irish soldier might feel, seeing you wear that without having to make any of the sacrifices he has...
If you want to honor your Grandfather I would suggest having the medals/insignia framed, I wouldn't wear them on everyday civilian clothes.

You cant wear them on any US military uniform, or in a manner which would tend to make others think you are actually that rank in the Irish Army or whatever, (When in doubt DON'T), but if youre just wearing them for adornment on a shirt or a coat, I should think that woiuld be no problem. However, if ANYONE says anything, I would remove them just so as not to get someone in ranks dander up. These days, you could be considered a terrorist for a wearing a Smiley Face button.

....as nicely to the above.... Russia had "Marshal of the Soviet Union" using fact the utmost rank. additionally they had the rank of "Marshal", greater than a regular. EDIT to function:- Scouse, there have been a minimum of 25 "Marshals of the Royal Air tension", (no longer purely one m8 LOL). Granted, a number of those 25 have been "Promoted on Retirement", replaced into an "Honorary Rank", and in one case, Sir Arthur "Bomber" Harris", replaced into promoted "months after retirement". the regular public have held the rank in complete, outdoors of those examples although. The rank is now no longer offered in "Peacetime", aside from, IF an R.A.F. Air chief Marshal is a member of the Royal kinfolk they could attain the rank of M.R.A.F., or, an Air chief Marshal may be promoted to M.R.A.F on the discretion of the monarchy, although this hasn't got here approximately on the grounds that 1992 using fact the 1st around of defence decrease backs on the top of the "chilly conflict" The Rank could greater be attained in "Wartime". needless to say ANY retired Marshal of the Royal Air tension keeps the rank for existence. the right same applies to "5 celebrity Rank" of the British military, The Royal military, and The Royal Marines, without greater container Marshals, or Admirals of the Fleet at the instant in provider. The Royal Marines are at the instant the only H.M. Forces branch that has a "5 celebrity" - "Captain regular", (albeit ceremonially); HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Not sure about the legalities, but the ethical practise of it would seem unjust in my opinion.
If you found your grandpa's police or doctor's uniform, it wouldn't seem right to wear them either, does it?
It may be as much a matter of conscience as anything else.
