Replace it with a faster laptop?

Reinstall Windows (depends what version of Windows you got, it may improve it immensely).

Use a registry cleaner tool to get rid of the garbage from the registry.

Defrag the hard disk.

Remove desktop icons you don't want.

Remove anything in 'start -> programs -> startup' that you don't want... they get run during the startup

Depending on version of Windows and how you log on... create yourself a new user account and abandon the old one as it clears out the historic stuff your old account wants to do.

Any and all of the above can help... depends how slow it's got.

Go to the C drive, then Windows, Prefetch. Then delete everything in this folder. The files in this folder are a record of everything that you have done. Windows load this up before you start. You don't need it.
