(They have put £10 worth of Diesel in, it was completely empty to start with. £10 of unleaded normally fills about a quarter of the tank.....) Not sure how far they went before it broke down.....

Diesel in a petrol car is no where near as bad as the other way round.
The car probably went for a couple of hundred yards and then slowly spluttered to a halt.
1 Tow the car home
2 Get as much of the diesel fuel out as you can by syphon or any method available to you(dispose of the fuel responsibly Your local council site)
3 Put in at least £20 of fresh fuel
4 Now this bit might be a bit harder as you have to get it going and it is ikely to be difficult to start. Once started it will smoke a bit until the diesel residue works through the system
5 Drive it as normal
6 Give you friend the kiss of life cos you didn't need to kill them
Good luck
All should be OK

It could be damaged depending on how long hewr ran it with the diesel. The immediate action is to completely drain the tank and replace the fuel with unleaded. Disconnect the carbi inlet and drain the carbi itself.
If its a 50 /50 situation you could be ok. That is the tank had a half tank at the time of fill. Still i would drain the tank and refill and then restart the car. You could be lucky . I did this to a vehicle without checking and I was advised to do what I just told you.

Obviously they drove the car long enough for the diesel to enter the entire fuel system.
You will have to drain the fuel tank and blow out the fuel lines from the engine back. Replace the fuel filter(s). If you have a carburated engine drain the carburator.
Actual damage to the engine should not have occured.
Now if you had a new common rail diesel engine (CDI, TDI etc..) the engine would have been toasted!!
Just a pain in the butt job, but mechanically there should be no damage.

How many bullshit answers can one question get!
Diesel will not harm anything at all in your petrol engine, calm down!!
You dont need to tow it anywhere, if you cant drain it yourself then simply fill the tank with the highest octane rated petrol available, it wont do any damage, just give a bit of smoke and be a bit sluggish until youve used the whole tank of fuel, next tankfull of petrol the car will be running fine.

The fuel system will need flushed out. No idea how much it would cost. There's no actual damage done. If you had a diesel engine and they put petrol in it, then that would've been a disaster. Petrol wrecks diesel engines but not the other way round.

Could be a complete engine re-build. Not a clever thing to do. A good mechanic can possibly drain the diesel out, don't run the engine any more and contact a good mechanic now!
I think you will kill this person when you see the bill for the repair.

Petrol needs an ingnition, and diesel needs to be compressed to explode. Its like putting water in the take, nothing will happen.

Well lets just say that if they've run the car it's a whopping bill! Your whole fuel system will have to be flushed and your tank taken out and emptied then washed out £500+

Well what you need to do is drain the petrol tank using a pump or just a bit of hose then u will need to replace the fuel filter then all you need to do is fill the car up with lots of petrol and that should fix it. it worked for me :)
