Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to biological data. It is most often applied to DNA sequence data, particularly at the genome (complete DNA sequence of entire species) level. It can also be applied to gene expresssion, proteomics, metabalomics and many other biology fields.

With the advance of molecular biology and genome sequencing scientists are generating huge amounts of data about genetics and gene expression. Because of the numbers of genes involved (10,000-100,000 depending on the organism) and the many possible interactions between genes and gene products, computers are essential to try to analyze data for patterns.
