I think that's what happiness really is. It depends on who you are and what you choose to make of your circumstances.
Seriously, I think of all the poor people that I've ever met and they are so happy. It's incredible because they don't have much and yet it seems that they have everything they need. They are happy. Then I think about all the rich people that I've ever met and they're constantly searching for something. It's odd how that works but it shows that people define themselves. They are in control.
A lot of people tend to look at things with a glass-half-empty mentality and that drags them down. How can anyone be happy if they constantly feel like they're missing something?
There are also people that look at things with a glass-half-full mentality and they're so high above, it's amazing.
In the end, I believe that none of us are victims of fate. We choose our circumstances. Yes, I do think everything happens for a reason. But it is OUR choice as to what we do when things happen. It is OUR choice as to how we feel and how we choose to react.
Happiness... you can't depend on someone or something to make you happy because things change, people change. By placing that kind of limit on yourself, you're condemning yourself to a constant wave. Sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down. But really, happiness is about you... what you're comfortable with, what makes you feel good, etc.
So yes, people are as happy as they decide to be.

Definitely, anyone can be happy if they choose to be. Also, the person that has everything can also be the most saddest person in the world. It all depends on the way they look at the world and their life. If you're constantly just looking into the light and looking at the positives, then it's easier for them to stay happy. Personally, I used to have everything: a boyfriend, a best friend, family, everything. However, I wasn't that happy at the time. Recently, I broke up with my boyfriend, my best friend is ignoring me, and I feel so lonely, but I'm just looking forward to things and trying to make the best out of my life right now. So it all matters with what kind of person you are, and if you're just willing to try to be a happy person. =)

I think happiness may be misconstrued. I know I wrote about this the other day in my blog- I'm very happy right now in my life because I finally have certain freedoms I previously wasn't granted. I also believe that personality is everything, having a positive outlook on life, including the ups and downs of every day trauma, I somehow manage to find a bit of happiness, if it isn't within myself, I will go out of my way to assist others in time of need- everyone hurts, it takes very little to recognize and be compassionate when sincerity is prevalent. That is just how I view it- thanks for listening to my words.

It must be your own decision, and not something you depend on the actions of others for.
An example, some would say "well I'll be happy if I win the lottery" And then, what?
Since the odds are against that, are they going to refuse to be happy?
Do you set conditions before God and say "Unless this, that and thus happen, I will refuse all offers of Joy and Contentment". ?
Or rather remember all the Joy you have had in the world before, and think about the fact that you will probably have more,?
When I took that picture of me playing my recorder, I was actually playing. Ode am der Freud.

Largely, I do believe that this is true to a great extent. Outside forces, influences, people, etc...can only affect your attitude if you let it....barring catastrophe (which I've even seen people who lost everything who were joyful & happy just to be alive & to have their family & friends & pets alive) sooooo...lemme rethink my own stance for a second.......
Having been reminded of people who choose to be happy even in dire circumstances, who had nothing but their lives & had to start over again with nothing & dealing with suddenly ruined credit & not enough food, let alone clothing....
I think that it is really an individual choice to use their own mind to affect their own emotions & to make the conscious decision to choose happiness.
NOTE: That for some who need medical assistance from a professional, this may only be possible with help from their doctor and prescription meds. That would be the exception to this theory as far as I can tell.

yeah,i agree.
thats exactly true.
happiness depnds on us and we can be as happy as we want to be.
sometimes we can share great happiness in small things.
and sometimes when we decide not to be happy, bigger than big things also doesn't make us feel even a bit happy.
we don't take the decision ourself, our mind takes it without informing us.
and so sometimes we get happy and soimetimes get sad at the same.

to some extend yes. but its not only personality that affects how happy a person is. outside factors like the environment, "fate", etc, counts. a person may be fatalistic or contented with his/her situation but that does not equal happiness.
maybe the word is joyful instead of happy. joy is permanent happiness isnt.

Yes, definately. If a person chooses to always be happy they can be, if someone is happy it spreads happiness to others.

The word happy comes from the word happenstance, meaning by chance, so happiness is based on your circumstance. Joy on the other hand is by choice.
