I mean, the cold metal zipper on jeans can cause extreme pain if misused. Was the zipper put there specifically for this purpose?

Sure, it can be painful if you get the skin of your penis caught in it. But
women who don't shave get hair caught in it
women who do shave and wear scanty underwear are liable to get the labia caught in it
those women who have learned to urinate standing have actually to pull the labia out through the zipper fly and that's even sorer!
