well i have a kawasaki KLR 650.Your basic thumper. The" Swiss army knife"of bikes.Goes any where in any condition.Wont be the best at anything but for the money it is hard to beat for a dirt road/rough pavement beater.I do live in rural NH so I know.I also have a Vulcan 2000 for cruisin but the klr is my choice for when it gets dirty.Ignore the get a HD notion unless you want to be a fool.Even the sportster i had was a pig on ice once the road surface was anything but smooth.

well it all depends on how much you ride on or off road, if you are going to be doing more off road I would recamend a big ktm 4 stroke like a 450 or 525. but if you are going to be doing more on road driving I would recamend a 950 ktm adventure has better road manners but still can kick a little *** on the trail if they are not tight wood trails. if they are tight trials stick to the 450 or a 525.
