Someone who doesn't have a life. A fulfilling or interesting life, anyway.

They say women gossip more than men as a way of "networking" - in these days of multimedia the possibilities for extending that network, at least mentally if not in reality, are greatly increased. So who would buy such a magazine? You could differentiate between someone who might buy it once only because she sees there's a piece in it about someone she admires for something they've achieved or a difficulty they've overcome, (say Josie Russell, who survived an attack against all odds and is now doing really well) and someone who buys the same magazine and perhaps others like it, every single week, devouring every piece of gossip about so-called celebrities. Is that person filling a vacuum in her life? Is she on some level looking for inspiration and even guidance and if so does that mean she lacks enough self-esteem or even strength of character to make judgements for herself? Perhaps the person who buys the magazine every week feels she knows the people written about in the magazine, or perhaps she is trying to extend her network of people she perceives as friends. People in the public eye have commented that "fans" act as if they know the celebrity personally and almost expect the celebrity to recognise them - this can obviously lead to feelings of rejection and hurt on the part of the "fan" when someone she admires and likes either ignores her or is actively hostile.

As for status - presumably this is social status - I would think that people of higher social status might already know "celebrities". Those who are financially well off often seem enviably confident and perhaps have little need to fall back on fantasy friendships and copying "celebrities" in gossip magazines. It might be useful to analyse the status of certain celebrities before they became well-known. I noticed in one magazine interview the singer Kym Marsh is supposed to have said, shortly after she became famous via Pop Idol or whatever it was, that "ordinary" men would not get a chance to approach her when she was out on the town as "I'll probably be at the bar with other celebrities".

I thought that was a very telling remark.

I think people that would just like some insight on how other people besides themselves live. Really this is everyone in society. Most women gossip magazines have to deal with very idiotic celebrities. So people that wanna know about paris hiltion are obviously retarded haha. But if your genuinely interested in maybe a politician or scientist some sort of mover and shaker. I dont see what is wrong with that. But to your original question haha. I work as a grocery store and the people that buy them usually look like they are lonely and do not have a social life of their own. Not to be mean but it is true.

Not me for a start, give me Practical Woodworker any day. The best way to establish the target market for a magazine is to look at the adverts. What is being advertised. If there are a lot of ads for top end expensive products then they are probably aimed at 40 plus middle to high income bracket who can afford that type of thing. If it's baby stuff it's obviously aimed at those in the child bearing stage which is generally 20's and 30's. If it's hearing aids and stair lifts then you are in the retirement market.

I'm not sure there would be any 'one type' of person who would read womens gossip mags. Some people read them for entertainment, others to get a glimpse into the lives of others. I prefer a good book and have never bought a gossip mag in my life but........... I have read my step mums when I've been bored and have nothing else to hand to read. I've also read them at the doctors surgery because there's nothing else to do while you wait. That doesn't mean I like them - it just means I'll read anything if I'm bored enough!

A very inquisitive person ( Don't assume that it will always be a women reading it) who is trying to find her fantasy life through the lives of other celebrity. Gossips can make or break the life of people targeted or even the person reading, so be careful what you publicize.

I'm a 31 year old with a masters degree, own home, good job, lovely fiance. I buy Grazia every week and pretend its for the fashion, but love the gossip too. Although I am fairly certain its all made up, I still just like the escapism of it. I'm also addicted to TMZ.com for the same reason.

do not understand, ask them. Why do adult men ask questions concerning the following about females who want to study celeb gossip magazines? i stumble on that that is weird and wonderful that you've faith that females like to study celeb gossip rags like "ok" and "in contact", even as adult men do in basic terms not care. And that when you spot those magazines and shows, you sense so disgusted, although the ladies on your existence (spouse, sisters, mom, co-workers, strangers on the bus, and so on.) all LOVE them. what is going on??? perchance each of the ladies you recognize are the brainwashed lots who believe they ought to aspire to be like non-entities.
