100 years from now aliens from distant planets will come and amaze: "Wow, it can't be! Though humanity destroyed himself because of its foolishness, the Earth is still standing"

The internet.
Sometime in this century, man would become dependent on the internet and it will develop sentience and begin taking over. It'll have access to all the knowledge in cyberworld and the humans would have a hard time fighting back. Since they've become dependent on the Inty, the sudden loss throws us back to early-mid 1900's and we have to rebuild. Humans might or might not have won and the textbooks and History channel documentaries would vary depending on the winner.
This sounds too cliche sci-fi, but hey it could happen.
