Though my antivirus picked nothing up, I suspected that my PC was infected after things kept crashing etc. So I did a reinstall - however, my heart sank when I found that after this, IE still randomly has to shut down at unexpected moments. Has the little b*stard evaded deletion?

Bios - the software running the mobo is not something that gets a virus typically. Not only that but in the event you were to get a virus or some kind of corruption it wouldn't spread to the computers OS like Windows or Linux, a virus at that level would simply just take the computer down. The highest probability is that you have some piece of software or are using and OS that has a virus in it's image. What I would do is go through everything you may have picked up in the grey areas of the internet and scan the crap out of it. Also, avoid loading these and over time add one at a time. When you get symptoms it will be easier to identify which piece of software is holding the virus.

If you just reinstall over the top of your present installation, leaving your files intact, the chances are that the virus will still be there ready to reinfect. If you backup your files and settings, reformat your entire hard drive and do an entirely fresh install of Windows then you have half a chance. If you restore your files and the virus is attached to one of those files, then there's still a small chance of reinfection if you don't get your security in place first (best to do a scan of your backup files and remove any possible infected files). There's a good argument for having your files on a separate partition so if you ever have to reinstall windows your data stays where it is)

A reinstall of Windows? That usually does nothing to viruses because viruses can hide in any folder and whatnot. The only way to get rid of a virus is to format and do a clean install of Windows. Make sure when you back up your files, that it's clean and virus-free so you don't transfer the virus over.

Yeah virus can survive a reinstall even if you format the drive. In fact some viruses due to the way they work can stop you hard disk drive from working which is why its always recommend to remove viruses with anti-virus software.
They can survie as they can create them selfs in parts of the hard disk drive that you don't have access to i.e boot sector/file location table ect...

YES! I have seen these. you are lucky i have the fix. u wont believe how easy it is. u ready! first disconnect computer from modem and/or router. then do another destructive recovery, a complete format. and then these time before u plug the modem take a paperclip and reset modem (their is a little pin hole or a button) i don't know how but i latches on to your ip or some thing. this has worked on 3 different comps. that had same symptom's as u. AND FOR U PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW THIS. I HAVE A PROGRAM THAT CAN RECOVER ALL DATA FROM A HARD DRIVE EVEN AFTER 2 COMPLETE FORMATS SO ANY THING IS POSSIBLE.

Format The Hard drive!
This will remove all data!
Then reinstall Windows as a clean reinstall not a repair!
Then load AVG, both 7.5 free, and anti-spy-ware, before connecting to the Internet!!!!!!!!!!
Then down load all the free updates, and you should be clear!

are you using IE7? if so, try deleting it and it will go back to IE6 which is far more stable than IE7 which is still in need of many bug fixes at moment(even though it's been released as full version!!!).
ps: NO a virus can't survive a reinstall BUT if you backed up your files before doing one you may have backed up the virus too which would reactivate when you load your files up.

Yes, it can especially if you are using Windoze. Only a reformatting of the hardd rive will remove everything on the disc -and I do mean everything- do this the command is easy type format C: in a dos window assuming drive c: is the one which holds Windoze.
