It is rather pointless to ponder over such a fallacy for I strongly believe that it is not ones gender that determines one's substance but rather the innate desire to build one's substance that is of the essence.
Just my two sense worth...

I think it's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, at least to some extent. People don't expect girls to be good at math, and so if a girl doesn't do that well in her math class, they say it's no big deal and don't do anything about it. But if a boy doesn't do well in the math class they get a tutor and help him out. So at the end of school, the boy can do math and the girl can't and everyone says, see, we knew that boys were better at math!

i think what drshorty says and because maybe boys are more serious about school work and think some subjects are more important than girls would find them.

Generally that has been my experience as a teachers that boys do better in some area that girls don't do well and vice versa.
