I hear this term often by people who dislike gays and tend to generalize and stereotype the GLBT community. But when I look around at everything I do in life I can't see much that could describe my entire life as a "gay lifestyle".Pretty much everything I do is exactly the same as what any other person does in life. The only exceptions might be that my spouse is a man and I occasionally attend gay festivals and events.
But that to me is no different then someone who is Irish attending a St. Patrick's Day parade or any other celebration or event that celebrates community pride or achievement. But beyond that my life is pretty basic and comparable to my family and neighbors.
Some might say because I am part of a community that is seeking to change laws and so forth. But I would say that I am part of a community that just wants equality the same as many other groups that have been historically mistreated and denied rights. But that is not the core of my life.My life is pretty basic.

So, what does "the gay lifestyle" actually mean?

The 'gay' lifestyle is a myth, does not exist and is used to infer that all gay men have multiple sex partners, are sexually promiscuous and are incapable of sustaining long-term romantic relationships.
I live an "Ashley" lifestyle, not a 'gay' one. I am in charge of my sex life - my homosexuality is not in charge of my behaviour.

"THe gay lifestyle" is nonexistant. It's the same as the straight lifestyle. The "queer lifestyle", however, I definitely think exists as a seperate entity. It would involve a lot more socio-political activism (instead of finding a partner and moving out to the suburbs to raise 2.5 kids and a couple of dogs). I'm not in any way slamming non-queer gay people, but I am saying that "the queer lifestyle" tends to get under-represented by the rights groups to try to appeal to normalcy (in a similar manner, the poster-people are almost always white). Thing is, there's nothing wrong, immoral, or illegal about the queer lifestyle, and those people also deserve all the same equal rights.

Many hetero people tend to either ridicule or play up the gayer aspects of your lifestyle either to be condescending/judgmental or to make a joke of it. I will admit to joking about some gay folks (Richard Simmons, for one). I am not saying that this is right or fair it seems like nearly everyone has someone in this world that they look down at one way or another.

Considering the fact that the phrase comes from the STRAIGHT LIFESTYLE - it simply means cosummating your gay relationship.
My sister keeps dating abusive men, and I've been happily committed to my girl for ten stable years... which "lifestyle" is better??

it's a meaningless phrase, the only common denominator is an attraction to one's own sex.
