Wow! you did that without even breaking a sweat! I wonder what you could do if you did break a sweat!? It would be untouchable man! Show me how you did that?
When they show you interject your 'better' ideas. and make them think they did it.
Better yet unless the person is a drama queen I would suggest using honesty. Never insult someones intellect by playing head games with them. In many cases it comes back to bite.
Use your better judgment.

To be honest with you I thought it was going to look more like this.
No matter how you say it you are probably going to get an answer like
"Well what do you want" or
"On what lines were you thinking of"
As some one else said look around at other sites, but don't say "I would like something like this or that"
Be precise in what you do or don't like otherwise you will end up in the same position.
When you are talking to the person have the site address's written down, along with any comments or observations, this way you can go directly to them so as not to waste their time and maybe your money. Also it will indicate to them that you have been working on the problem too

I assume that this is a design for you?
If it is just tell them that you don't really like it, otherwise you may end up stuck with a poor design.
I find it best to just tell the truth with these type of things.
If you are paying for it, just tell them. I know a web designing bussiness that will redo the whole design if the client doesn't like it.
Also by telling them the truth they might decide to work on their designing skills. So they will not be in this position again :D.

Point out a webpage design that you do like and say you really like the look and feel of it, and you would prefer it to be more like that.

You could always say something like this. "I couldn't open your webpage properly with my Mozilla Firefox. Is your site is compliant with it?"
