In my personal opinion, a lot of people lie to protect themselves from hurting themselves or others around them. That doesn't make it ok, but sometimes saves them a little trouble. The frustrating thing is that when they do lie about whatever situation, most likely, being honest in the first place would have been better, because lies have a way of rearing their ugly heads quickly and violently. People who lie constantly are called compulsive generally because they can't live up to their own expectations in life and lie to cover the truth about themselves thinking that they will fit in better or even impress someone. One huge lie I told was when I met my husband many years ago. He and his friend were obviously competing for my affections, and just wouldn't shut up about who was smarter and who got higher HSC scores and so on, I got p***ed off, so I said," well, I got 99%, so there." They looked at me, were impressed, and it shut them up. The first few years with my husband were quite funny, because he really did think I did score that well, and I did pretty well to cover my tracks by getting my friends and family who knew the truth to back up my story. Then I couldn't hold it any longer, so I fessed up, and he was ok with it. Lucky. It worked out for me, but that's not always the case with liars. I personally do not like to lie because the lie is always so hard to remember, so I am actually quite an honest person. My motto is, if you can't handle the honest answer, don't ask me, because I will tell you the truth, even if it hurts. Its better for everyone in the long run to say the truth. Even a white lie is still a lie. Telling the truth helps people grow and understand and accept themselves, otherwise you can seriously give false confidence to someone you really care about. The only situation I think is acceptable to lie in is when you are absolutely sure you will never see that person again. But remember the 7degrees of separation theory. Just know that lies are a part of human behavior and the only one you can stop from lying is yourself. Sorry bout the essay, but I hope I was able to help.

Some people lie because there is no other way out of a situation. Others lie because they are cowards. I occasionally have pulled a white lie for the sake of others.

some people lie because they don't know how to tell the truth, because they don't want to hurt others...
but there are some mean ppl out there who just lie for the "fun" although i don't see any fun in that...
but if it is lying to prevent you from being hurt then..that person probably thought that that was the best way...

i will tell you what happend to me, one day i stayed back after college to do some work, next to me my friend was chating to a previous friend of his who was a girl, when i looked at the name, she was Afghan, i took the e-mail address and added it to my msn, and we started chating, she asked who are you? who give you my ee-mail addres, i just said you, can you remember, this girl was gorgous, more than gorgous, she said come and see me, because i cant remember you, but i dident go, i am so sorry for what i did to her, this continued for weeks, now she fould out who give me her add, SO I THINK PEOPLE LIE, IN SATUATIONS WHERE THEY WANT SOMETHING, OR WANT TO AVOID DOING SOMETHING, AND YOULATER REGRET.

It depends on the motives behind the lies you are telling.Sometimes you do it not to break sb's heart;it may work, but when you do it impulsively;then you should take your temperament into consideration seriously.
