English is a West Germanic language that developed from Old English, the language of the Anglo-Saxons. English, having its major roots in Germanic languages, derives most of its grammar from Old English, although a substratal Celtic influence has also been postulated. This is an area of ongoing research.[3][4] As a result of the Norman Conquest, it was heavily influenced, more than any other Germanic language, by Norman French, Latin and Classical Greek. From England it spread to the rest of the British Isles, then to the colonies and territories of the British Empire (outside and inside the current Commonwealth of Nations) such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and others, particularly those in the Anglophone Caribbean. As a result of these historical developments English is the official language (sometimes one of several) in many countries formerly under British or American rule, such as Pakistan, Ghana, India, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, and the Philippines.

Well, i don't know too exactly. But can tell you something bout the words. English is the language which is having the most no. of words in it other than any other language. And why that too i can tell you. Long ago British people started building princely states in many countries of the world. Few of them were Lands of America, India, Pakistan, etc. They heard many new words there and thus did take them in their vocabulary. That's why many of the English words are as it is with the same meaning only written in different scripts in many other languages. E.g. JUNGLE, this word is also in Eng, which is derived from 4-5 Indian languages, with the same meaning. NEAT, this word too is found in 2 Indian languages. There are so many as it is words. Impossible to list few also. Well, in the end i will just say. After all English many-a-times being "funny" language(with the spellings different and no similar pronunciations e.g. to, do & go. cut, but & put. psychology. coronel. bouquet) still is an Universal Language. Only language used all over. Go any where.

I don't think any modern languages are necessarily invented.
Since they all have root words from ancient languages. Don't quote me but its something like 80% of all English root words comes from LATIN. The other 20% comes from GREEK. English and Spanish have a large Latin influence. This is why it's eaiser for an American to learn Spanish or vice versa than it is for an American to learn Japanese. The word order, sentence structure, and verb conjugation are similar.
NOW how did people take two ancient languages Latin And Greek and add something new to create English is a good question. One of the main reasons is travel and cultural diversification. As people traveled and mixed cultures new languages developed over a period of time. English was not some man's magical invention. It developed as a gradual process that had many ancient influences. It formed when those ancient words where intermengled between different cultures in (newly found terrority).<<<< This is important remember as people traveled and inhabitated new lands their country's language influence decreased thus causing new languages to form.

it was invented by Mr English about 500 years ago.
Prior to that we spoke latin.
Mr English decided it was time to modernise the language and
thus invented what we now know is English.
A patent was granted and now Mr English legacy lives on.
He exported to many Countries which was quite a feat.
Mr Esperanto tried to get on the band wagon but unfortunately it was not to be.
Hope this helps

The invaders from the mainland had to talk to the native barmaids and the languages merged to form the beginnings of English

What an utterly stupid question, and what is it doing in the Astronomy & Space category?
Languages (other than artificial ones) are NEVER "invented", they develop!

They didn't invent it. It evolved from Proto-Indo-European, as did many other languages. The changes were mostly the result of societal upheaval.
