It was originally written for Mission Impossible. The original TV version though, in the late 60's. It was used in other movies (comedies) as a spoof. It implies the actors are doing something dangerous or sneaky.
Like, Revenge of the nerds when they were doing the panty raid.
The Tom Cruise versions updated the song in each of MI1, 2 and 3.

Seeing as the question makes reference to RotNs, what is the name of the uncredited band that played a version of the Mission Impossible theme in Revenge of the Nerds (camera installing sequence). To me that is the best version of the theme and ideally, I would like a link to the track. I'm not interested in other versions of the theme. Thank you.

The music IS original to the TV series but is often used in spy skits and spoofs for fun!
