That's a really stupid question, sir/ma'am/it.
Music isn't a language, nor can it be substituted for one.
I think we should send them a copy of the Bible expressed through interpretive dance!
Sorry, Justin. I disagree. I think the OP is starting off with a bullshit proposition because they honestly believe the crap they posted.
It's not up to you and I to interpret what someone says and give them the answer *we want* them to have. Our job is to answer the question they ask by giving them the answer *they want*.
Anything else is a waste of time.

I would want something from everywhere on this globe.
Just sending them one type of music is not going to give them a good, accurate representation of humanity.
I am an American but I know that if I sent them American music they would only understand Americans. Even at that, if I only sent them one type of American music, they would only learn of one small section of Americans.

I would start with the theme from 2001 to get their attention; as if to say "Hey, I've got something to say and this is the beginning of it, pay attention if you're interested"
Then, I would send out samples of everything I can get my hands on.
Randkl - the asker is asking you to go with the assumption for arguments sake. There are no stupid questions, only the occasional, monumentally stupid answer.

Yes.Every one likes and listens to music.My favorite is hip hop but I also like rock.If I'm sad or I feel hopeless I listen to music.Music helps me relax and regain my smile.
I'd send all kind of music in space so aliens could listen to all music genres and decide which one they like more.

assuming they can hear frequencies from 20 Hz - 20 kHz, like the human ear.... I'd just scare the hell out of them and send the THX sound at 130decibels... and maybe Aphex Twin.
