i'll paste my own response to another question
well, you can download either a codec pack, so you can play everything or you can download VLC media player which contains the codecs by itself, (making it highly convenient and portable) http://www.videolan.org
i'd rather stick to the new WMP11 so (personally i use media player classic which is packaged with it)
CCCP - let's you play most of everything

Quicktime alternative

and finally
Realtime alternative

After installing these, i have had no trouble playing any media file

Media player can't play avi files without you downloading extra codecs for it. To be honest though, this is a highly unnecessary effort. Just download VLC media player instead, it can play any video format under the sun...

If u cant play the movies u downloaded its either corrupted or u might not have the codecs installed to play the movies on here is a useful tool to help you with search for G-spot compliance codec identifier or avicodec then open the file with it it should say which codec is needed to play the file kuz if u dont have the codec installed then your not going to be able to play them or download like videolan or someother movie player

Agree with GL; Windows Media Player is possibly the worst that could've installed, but it comes with Windows anyway; WMP gave me no end of trouble but it is solvable within VLC. WMP is trying to find a codec that doesn't exist on Microsoft's server.

You probably need the proper codecs. The most common ones are DivX, XviD, and MP4. You can download codec packs online that install the most often used codecs so whenever a movie file requires it, your computer will be able to play it. A codec pack is K-Lite Codec Pack, which should be free.

You might not have the required codec to watch the videos. Try ACE Media Codecs. It has many codecs installed in it.

only thing I can say is - make sure youre using the most current version of Windows Media Player....and re-install your current version (remove, then re-download via MS Update)
Or...use a 3rd party media player (mediamonkey is free and very well liked)

Where did you download load these AVI movies from ????????
I would say a peer to peer program - many AVI movies on peer to peer programs will not play or they will play but you will be un-able to convert them or burn them, this is because they are corrupt.
