They were testing a system to shoot down orbiting satellites. Theoretically, they could target US spy satellites or GPS satellites and virtually cripple us if fighting were to break out over Taiwan or some other issue.

They also recently unveiled a Chinese fighter jet all developed in China. It's what super powers do. China wants to be one of world super power stocking up on advanced weapons. Gives them some leverage in talks with other super powers.
