When people talk about themselves it's not usually because they like talking about their life. They seek a positive response to reinforce or even boost their self belief.
Some people openly self criticise and put themselves down in order to force a sympathetic positive reaction. It's described as 'Fishing for compliments'
Others carefully sell their qualities or achievements, hoping to prompt a reaction that gives them the complimentary feedback they desire.
Some people need this in order to feel a high self worth and social acceptance.

To Jason: People can be altruistic and still talk about themselves. Being inclined to help other people just for the sake of doing it dosn't really have anything to do with whether or not a person enjoys expressing the way they feel or who they are to others.

I think that egocentrism is an idea born and raised in a household. It's something that is probably passed on from parent to kin.
It's a sort of ignorance that some people are raised by. Such people probably exhibit other forms of ignorance.
For example: the question that you asked is in the form of a blanket statement.
You did not attempt to seperate people who talk about themselves and people who do not. Plenty of people are altruistic, me being one of them.

It is a natural thing to want to do, talk about ourselves and our experiences. However, to impress a stranger, it is much more likely that this stranger will become a friend if you concentrate on their life and listen to their story.
Successful people are those who listen to others and respond kindly to what they are told. This is true in any walk of life. It is most especially true in business or trade.

We can talk about ourselves without bragging, we may be proud of something that we've achieved and would like to share the good news with others.

Not all people like talking about themselves but majority do that and its because everyone would like to appear the best because of this and that reasons. This because they will always talk about the good things about themselves and not mentioning the bad ones.

Because we live under the delusion that we are special and important on an individual level--when, in reality, we are nothing and we mean nothing. It's difficult for us to face this reality--as such, we create this fictive religious crap to quell our insecurities.
